In May I held a one-month exhibit and sale at Jordan Art Gallery. In June, with Barbara Wilson, an exhibit and sale at Keith's Restaurant in Fonthill, and in August participated in PASSIONART, a juried wine, music and art fund-raising event sponsored by the Rotary Club in Niagara-on-the-Lake. This winter I shall return to Tucson, Arizona where I will paint the desert.
I have continued teaching, both privately and through workshops at Brock University, and welcome new students. My studio/gallery is open by appointment. Please call 905-468-4809.
Magdalena's newest works are a startling departure from the florals for which she is best known. An inveterate traveller, she's created brushstroke travelogues of trips across Canada and the Arctic, the Southwest United States, Mexico, the Caribbean Europe. Magdalena finds that exploring new lands and peoples excites her senses, compelling her to interpret each experience with a fresh, new approach.
Rugged mountains and desert landscapes are transformed into what she terms "dreamscapes", more impressionistic than realistic, capturing the soul that lies beneath surface appearances. In her treatment of people in her paintings, Magdalena reaches into aspects of humanity that are truly touching, while offering configurations that remain in your heart.
The evolution of my life and work has been like a river, free-flowing, caring its own path.
The inspiration has come from nature. The gardens in my home town, Niagara-on-the-Lake, have beckoned me to paint flowers, a subject that people have always identified me with. For the past 20 years a new inspiration has entered my work through the various places I have visited. Some of these - Portugal, New Mexico, Arizona, Baffin Island, Nova Scotia, Haiti, Tuscany and Mexico are reflected in these works, and each has contributed differently to my growth.
